About ME
JOHN COBB
John is a certified teacher with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) with a focus on Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced Levels Piano. He has played piano all his life, and grew up surrounded by live music in a family of professional musicians and music teachers who continue their careers today. During his early years in Albany, New York, John studied with local legend Stanley Hummel, a Julliard school graduate, concert pianist, and recording artist. In university, John was a member of the Albany State Chorale, a 16 voice performance ensemble. He graduated from Albany State with a Bachelor of Science degree. His early career took him to Atlanta, Dallas, and finally, Toronto. During that time, John continued to maintain his piano skills, accompanied local soloists, and played four hands with other pianists. John lives in Etobicoke, Ontario with his wife Sara.

PHILOSOPHY
John’s background, experience, and observations, inform his belief that the most important element in learning to play piano is to have fun. Part of the fun is the satisfaction of playing your favorite music. The sooner a student can play familiar tunes, the more he/she will be receptive to improving basic skills. Anyone can learn (or re-learn) to play. Child or adult, if you have access to a keyboard, and can dedicate regular practice time, you’ll enjoy the piano. Depending on age and ability, each student receives a specific plan to allow them to achieve their goals.
Playing piano is a life skill, like speaking another language or learning to swim. My goal for every student is to help them develop piano skills to enable them to play the music they want to play, and to do it with pleasure, forever. This is the ultimate satisfaction for me as a teacher. To get to this level, students need a good base of technical skills and musical skills. Each lesson, and each practice session, is customized to address both these needs. Piano lessons should also be fun and enjoyable. The more students enjoy what they are doing, the more they practice. More practice, equals better playing!
